Montgomery County Attorneys: Economic Issues Related to Divorce, Support and Prenuptial Issues

At High Swartz LLP in Norristown, Pennsylvania, our attorneys have received national recognition for their expertise in drafting marital settlement agreements. In addition to representation during divorce proceedings, attorney Mary Cushing Doherty provides expert services in the interpretation of prenuptial, marital and post-divorce agreements.

Advocates for our client, reaching for the best result

Our approach as divorce lawyers is to identify the client’s goals, describe realistic expectations, then thoroughly prepare for and carefully monitor every stage of proceedings. We insist that opposing counsel respond promptly so issues are resolved within a reasonable time. We work with clients, from the outset, to spot important economic issues.

We are tenacious advocates, and often are successful in helping our clients reach a beneficial agreement through negotiation. We assist clients who seek alternative dispute resolution (ADR), such as mediation, arbitration and collaborative law. We are fully prepared to go to trial if it is in our client's best interests.

Divorces involving complex marital estates

It is important to address the many layers of complexity in divorce cases involving large or unusual marital estates. The first challenge our attorneys and forensic accountants face is identification of non-marital and marital assets and debt. If there is a prenuptial agreement, it is examined to determine whether it is valid and enforceable. If our attorneys prepare a prenuptial agreement, we will spot issues so the parties avoid future problems in the event of death, separation or divorce. We then arrange to have business and economic experts value stock options, interests in closely held corporations, pensions and other retirement assets, real estate holdings and other marital property and debt.

When drafting or negotiating a property settlement agreement, we take a holistic approach, considering the long-term tax consequences, psychological value of each asset to our client, the impact of alimony and child custody on the overall picture, and estate issues. We focus on our client's economic and personal well-being, and on finding practical solutions for all related problems.

Family law attorneys

We help our clients prepare for the future. Divorcing spouses with children need, long after their marriage is over, to respect each other as parents. In addition to divorce and equitable division of property, our attorneys assist our clients with a variety of domestic relations matters, including custody, grandparent custody, stepparent adoption, modification of existing orders and protection from abuse.
